An Ithaca, N.Y. native, Vanessa Valentine, is a May, 2000 graduate of Alfred University's New York State School of Art & Design where she majored in art and design, history and photography. She joined the Air Force as a photographer shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and then studied public affairs and photojournalism at the Department of Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Md. During her 11 year military career she documented

combat operations, criminal

investigations, natural disasters, foreign and domestic political dignitaries and received several distinctions for her work. Among her awards, she received the Air Force Combat Action Medal, the Joint Commendation Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal and, the Army Commendation Medal. Currently, residing in the Central Coast of California, she works as a freelance photojournalist and is a member of Military Veterans in Journalism. She has worked as a Scientific & Technical photographer and also provides visual information for several military related nonprofit governmental, and non-governmental organizations.
